In a way I don't blame them. There is not much we can do about it.

I don't think, in my lifetime which started in 1949, there has ever been a time when life as we know it hangs by such a very thin thread.

In the past it was usually a single threat. Today there seem to be numerous potential events that could be devastating on some level. With so many threats odds favor something bad is going to happen..
