Cash registers jingling with holiday spending U.S. consumer spending rose 12 percent during the first nine days of the holiday shopping season, Visa USA said. Consumers spent more than $10.3 billion -- or an average $1.1 billion a day -- in more than 156 million Visa card transactions since the shopping season started more than a week ago. Sales increases were led by mail and telephone orders, which rose 15 percent from the same period a year ago, to $1.7 billion."
