By any measure, Medicare was was passed in a bipartisan manner: with 70 votes in the House and 13 in the Senate.

But Medicare has been a horribly destructive force for America. We would have been far better off without it. Not only did it cause the health care cost spiral we've seen for the last 40 years, it has left future generations with so much debt they can never hope to pay it.
