Re Would you want to take over a company with such huge inventory problems?

Nope. Also, remember that they haven't written off that inventory-stuffed channel. They've chosen instead to reduce shipments until the inventory gets down to the levels they like. Someone on the "Ghost" thread (Dee Jay) suggested that they may have to end up marking down all those modems in the channel, which will have to be upgraded around March 98. If you were thinking of buying a modem, would you buy now or buy in March (one with the standard already programmed in)? It's the same question we on the USRX thread debated exactly a year ago. The answer evidently was that on average, people were choosing to wait (for the 56K modems), because the channel that USRX handed over to COMS was evidently stuffed to the hilt.

It's also noteworthy that Oracle said "Our Asian guys were reducing numbers (sales) all the way to the end of the quarter".
