By raising the limits old people would have to pay that for very few years (or none, if they're already getting cash) while younger people making higher salaries might have to see a lot more of their money go to money heaven than they are seeing now... Let's be real about this, unlike the republicans. We ought to be able to admit that this IS a system that takes from the young and gives to the old, with the assumption that the young will become old and get something- but the system has enough insecurity in it that I don't think we should really be making it more cumbersome. As Meta and I agreed (I think) we both want means testing- I'd prefer that to raising the caps, which has the potential to generate a lot more intergenerational friction than means testing does. You may not like it, but social security favors the old at the expense of the young. Sure, it would be nice if money were more accessible, but right now the poorest of the poor are often children, which makse no sense to me at all, since they're expected to grow up and support this whole mess. I get that you'd like more money to be there overall, but this is just not going to happen now. And not everyone does get old. Plenty of people die without receiving a cent. It's not such a great deal for them. My adoptive dad died at 63. Have known plenty of people who died in their early 60's and their 50's. What we really ought to be doing is figuring out how to better support the young in this country. But they don't vote, so few people give a shit about them after their born. (But don't try to abort them before we let them live in poverty!)
