I can try to answer this, I see twitter as a replacement to traditional news sources. Since its crowd sourced information, the lag between an event occurance to it being reported via a tweet is practically zero. It also means that the accuracy of a particular news event is across a spectrum and depends upon the user to make use of his/her judgement skills.

Justinfo is correct in noting that Twitter can be used to follow breaking news. I use it strictly as a new feed. Following individuals or entities is similar to SI's Peoplemarks, except that your feed will show all of their posts in real time.

There is the danger of information overload if you follow too many accounts. You can mitigate that problem by using Twitter's List function. Earlier today, Ron posted a link to an excellent piece on how to use the List function: Message 29155935

Tweets are limited to 140 characters and you can post pictures and short videos. You can simply post stuff or interact directly with other members. Twitter like to think of itself as a huge Town Square.

As an investment, who knows? I do believe that it will be a survivor long-term.

>am not sure what the attraction really is

KPL - It can be a direct line to your interests - Example- I like growing & flowers. I can follow top growers and pro & gardeners all over the county. You can see the buzz going on. If you find Tweeters you like to follow. Once comfortable, you might want to tweet a professional at a company or a followed individual with a question. Use the search tool to find your interests & individuals.

That's just one example - Cooking- money managers-politics- create list of people involved or companies you want to follow.

Yes- there are plenty of companies that want to get their names out and individuals that promote junk. You can block any nuisances and people you don't want following you.
