Service Provider Customers Offer Positive Reaction to New
Frame Relay Modules Announced Today by Ascend
Communications

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1997--Ascend Communications, Inc.
(NASDAQ:ASND - news) released reaction from service providers on its announcement
made today of four new modules for its B-STDX Multiservice Frame Relay 8000/9000 WAN
switches and to the company's recent shipment of over one million Frame Relay WAN switch
ports. Below are the reactions from Ascend's service provider customers:

Al Castellani, Senior Design Engineer -- Frame Relay, Cincinnati Bell

''We are very excited to continue working with the best WAN Frame Relay platform in the
industry. The new Ascend Frame Relay modules introduced today provide us with innovative,
cost-effective solutions for meeting our growing Frame Relay demands -- translating into
quicker and stronger services for our customers. In particular, the new B-STDX Channelized
DS 3/1/0 module promises us almost unlimited DS0 density. That gives us the capacity to
scale our service offerings to support literally thousands of users on a single B-STDX
platform.''

Mike Johnson, Director of WAN Communications, Intermedia Communications, Inc.

''With both Frame and ATM networks in our environment, integration is a major concern for
us. Ascend's new OC-3/STM-1 1WU provides a simple solution that lets our B-STDX
Frame Relay and CBX 500 ATM networks work together. Now we have flexibility to connect
the B-STDX with the CBX 500 using either direct cell trunking or Frame Relay-to-ATM
interworking.''

Bob Fulghum, Project Manager, Fast Packet Services, BellSouth

''Ascend's announcement of the availability of the B-STDX Channelized DS 3/1/0 module
demonstrates its commitment to its users to provide the capability to scale the embedded
base of Ascend switches to meet the continued demand for Frame Relay. The 3/1/0 module
offers the potential to increase DS-0 density to an unprecedented 672 ports per module. The
3/1/0 will offer a cost-effective method for continued scaling of our Frame Relay services
offering.''

John Cooper, Director, Data Services, Frontier Corporation

''Once again Ascend is raising the bar with cutting-edge WAN Frame Relay switching
solutions. Ascend's new Channelized DS 3/1/0 module for the B-STDX 9000 is exactly what
we need to meet growing end-user demand for Frame Relay Services.''

Mike Rouleau, Vice President, !NTERPRISE Networking Services, U S WEST

''This announcement confirms Ascend's leadership in Frame Relay innovation. We currently
use Ascend's existing B-STDX Channelized DS3 module which provides us with tremendous
T1 Frame Relay density. We look forward to the release of the newly announced B-STDX
Channelized DS 3/1/0 module that will support both DS1 and DS0 simultaneously with a
maximum of 672 DS0s. Ascend's DS 3/1/0 solution will help U S WEST continue to meet our
customers' demand for Frame Relay access.''
