Okay, it may be the late hour, but an idea came to mind.

How about if the second wild card teams of each league were selected by a random drawing of all the teams that didn't otherwise qualify for the playoffs. The number of entries each team would have in the drawing would be directly proportional to their number of wins.
This keeps everyone in the game all through September, and prevents teams from going into a late season slump to improve their draft position.

Maybe they could exclude any World Series champion of the last 20 years :)
