NEWS: Mil Spec FC Systran Corp. to License FibreXpress Technology for Development of Ruggedized Fibre Channel Hardware DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1997--Systran Corp., developer of the FibreXpress Fibre Channel Network, on Dec. 8, 1997 announced an agreement to license their FibreXpress technology for the development and distribution of ruggedized Fibre Channel hardware. Under the terms of the agreement, DY 4 Systems Inc. of Kanata, Ontario, Canada will develop rugged Fibre Channel hardware based on Systran's PMC, PCI and VME6U FibreXpress Network interfaces. Ruggedized versions of Systran's Network Transparent Switch (NTS) and associated FibreXpress, NTS Port Cards are also planned. Systran and DY 4 will work together to provide the performance of Fibre Channel in environments that previously proved too harsh for traditional COTS computer hardware. This ruggedized hardware will have a high degree of tolerance for environmental conditions that are beyond the operational specifications of standard commercial electronic devices. The most immediate beneficiaries of this agreement should be military organizations such as the US Air Force, who require the high bandwidth, low latency communications of FibreXpress in environmentally harsh, physically strenuous, and interference plagued environments. Systran will continue to provide FibreXpress hardware and software for research laboratories, radar stations, shipboard sonar and other applications where COTS equipment is appropriate. DY 4 will develop and distribute rugged Fibre Channel hardware, for applications requiring a high level of immunity to extreme temperatures and other adverse environmental factors. Rugged Fibre Channel hardware developed by DY 4 will utilize Systran's proven FibreXpress hardware technology and will run with Systran's FibreXpress driver software. "DY 4's position as the world's leading supplier of COTS and rugged computer subsystems, makes them the obvious choice to take FibreXpress Technology into adverse environments," stated Tom Bohman, Systran's product strategy manager. "We look forward to a productive relationship with DY 4 and believe their experience in ruggedizing computer hardware will make the transition of FibreXpress technology to rugged applications a smooth one," he continued. "Our relationship with Systran will allow military/aerospace integrators to take advantage of the high performance backbone communications provided by Fibre Channel technology," said Ed Hennessy, DY 4's senior vice president of sales and marketing. Located at 4126 Linden Ave., Dayton, Ohio 45432-3068 USA, Systran specializes in shared-memory networking, Fibre Channel networking, MIL-STD-1553 interfaces, I/O IP modules, and defense-related hardware/software R&D. As the world leader in VMEbus systems for harsh environments, DY 4 Systems Inc. provides VME COTS solutions for a wide range of avionics, naval and vetronics platforms. DY 4 specializes in embedded computing solutions -- boards, chassis, software, systems and service -- for VME systems deployed in mission-critical military and aerospace applications. -0- Photographs available in a variety of electronic formats.
