Impact from Asia crisis on US economy limited-NAPM

NEW YORK, Dec 9 (Reuters) - U.S. purchasing executives have little fear of the impact on the U.S. economy stemming from
financial crisis in Asia, said Norbert Ore, an official with the National Association of Purchasing Management.

Ore, who chairs NAPM's business survey committee, said the organization's membership expected to see a 3.6 percent
increase in gross domestic product in 1998 and that problems in Asia should not have more than a 0.5 percentage point
impact on the U.S. economy.

Ore also said that productivity gains should continue to outstrip inflationary wage pressures.

He said challenge for many companies was to reposition in order to maintain market share.

He said such industries as paper and textiles have begun to reap the benefits of improved technology.

Ore also said, although evidence was mostly annecdotal, labor shortages were mostly concentrated in entry level positions.
