You know you're in trouble when you recognize the top losers but not the top gainers

11/1/13 Contest Update
I’m back! So, for sure, biotechies will soon regain their courage. Speaking of courage, my recent travels included a visit to the FDR Museum in Hyde Park. I thought the exhibits were exceptionally well done and this famous FDR quote from his First Inaugural Address seems apropos for biotech investors: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
Although the broader indexes did Ok over the three weeks since my last update, with Ariad being a major drag the Contest median had a harder time. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 42.09% YTD (vs. up 53.97% YTD three weeks ago). Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Biotech Index finished up 50.57% YTD (vs. up 46.74% YTD three weeks ago) and the Nasdaq Composite Index finished up 29.89% YTD (vs. up 25.58% YTD three weeks ago).
Despite losing ground over the three weeks, RKRW’s portfolio, now up 129.28% YTD, remained in the lead. GHMM’s’s portfolio moved into second place with a 123.86% YTD gain and ROBO’s portfolio, up 122.19% YTD, took over third place. So, the race for the Contest Gold has tightened quite a bit.
At Friday's close, 33 of the 39 Contest portfolios were in the black with 18 of the 39 beating the NBI.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the three weeks since my last update.
Portfolio adjustments: CLSN 1-4.5 reverse split on 10/30/13
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Peace & good health,
Bulba
