Irvine Sensors Announces New Division's First Order

COSTA MESA, Calif., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Irvine Sensors Corporation (Nasdaq: IRSN,
BSE: ISC) announced today that its newly formed Microelectronics Products Division (MPD)
has received its first production order. MPD was established to broaden Irvine Sensors' stacked
memory product line to include not only the firm's historical ultra-high-density products, but
also devices tailored to market segments that are more price and time-to- market driven. MPD's
new products range from stacks of Thin Small Outline Packages (TSOPs) to both hermetic and
non-hermetic stacks which utilize ball- grid-array (BGA) attachment techniques permitting
packages with high input- output counts. The product line incorporates a variety of technologies
proprietary to Irvine Sensors which are the subject of existing and pending patents. MPD's first
order is the initial increment of an anticipated approximate $400,000 purchase. Delivery of the
total order is expected to be completed in the second quarter of calendar 1998.

''The significance of this order is not its size, which is modest, but its immediacy. We had
originally anticipated that it would take several more quarters to familiarize our customer base
with our new product offerings before MPD got its first booking. This almost immediate market
response suggests that our longer-term planning may be overly conservative,'' said James D.
Evert, Irvine Sensors' President and Chief Executive Officer.

Irvine Sensors (www.irvine-sensors.com), headquartered in Costa Mesa, California, is
primarily engaged in the development and production of high density electronics, image
processing and sensing devices, and low power integrated circuits which are intended to have
extensive systems applications.

Except for historical information contained herein, the matters set forth in this news release are
forward-looking statements that are dependent on risks and uncertainties including such factors,
among others, as the development risks inherent in new technology, the impact of competitive
technologies and the pace at which new markets develop. Further information on Irvine Sensors
Corporation is contained in publicly-filed disclosures available through the SEC's EDGAR
database (www.sec.gov) or from the Company's Investor Relations.
