A Davenport man said he was assaulted this week while walking home, and now his neighbors want to start a neighborhood watch to combat what they see is a recent rash of [black on white] crime.

Travis Lingle said he had ditched his car for a Wednesday evening stroll to a local video store for exercise, when on the way home, six young [black] men darted out from behind Adams Elementary School and jumped him on the school grounds.

They surrounded Lingle, hurtling insults before landing blows to his head. He said he tried to escape by running to West 29th Street, even jumping over a parked car.

He couldn't outrun them. He said they had him on the ground in the middle of the street, punching and kicking him and pulling his T-shirt up over his head.

"Thank God for the headlights," he said, recalling how he looked up and saw the headlights of a car approaching. He then saw the [black] men run away just as fast as they had come.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred about 9:15 p.m. in the 1600 block of West 29th, Davenport Police Capt. Dale Sievert said.

Lingle's injuries were still visible Friday. There were cuts above his right eyelid and right eyebrow and bruises elsewhere on his face. His four bottom front teeth were held in by a wire, and one tooth was broken in half.

"I cleaned up my shoe," he said, pointing to the white sneaker on his left foot. "You can still see a little bit of blood on it."

Lingle gave descriptions of his [black] attackers to police, although he said the incident happened so fast he couldn't get a good look at them. The [black] men ranged in age from 16 to 25, and Lingle thinks one of them had a beard. None of them had any unusual marks or tattoos.

Lingle said he didn't recognize any of them but thinks they live in the neighborhood.

Amanda Lingle said one of her husband's attackers tried to friend him on Facebook the day after it happened. They didn't respond, she added.

Travis Lingle thinks they were trying to intimidate him through Facebook, he said.

His wife had posted his assault on Facebook shortly after it happened, and within moments, friends made comments describing other assaults and acts of vandalism in the neighborhood over the past few months.

George Strader, who lives near Lingle, said he is reviving a local neighborhood watch group to encourage his neighbors to be more proactive and call police if they witness anything suspicious.

"We're not trying to create a hostile atmosphere," Strader said. "We're looking to bring the neighborhood together."

Strader said that on Thursday, two young men had broken out his neighbor's car window in the middle of the day. Other neighbors tried to corner the men before chasing them away.

Strader's own car was broken into two weeks ago, he said.

"I grew up on the west end of Davenport, on 4th Street," Strader said. "In the 1980s, my father organized a neighborhood watch. It's sad that history repeats itself.

"We have a great neighborhood here, and we want to keep it that way."
