lets make me clear I have no doubt that China is importing substantial amounts of gold, as gold in the perception of their people is money and this I know for many years since HK, was the only place to find 24K jewelry 20 years ago when at the same time US was selling even 8K to 10K jewelry and 14K or 18K was the standard in most Western places and 22K gold was quite rare. (K is for karat en.wikipedia.org )
