Certainly you are right that the power brokers in the Republican Party hate their base. To have liberal Republicans openly regretting that the base of their party is not liberal is telling. While a party needs to be open to all views to gain power there has to be a certain minimum of party loyalty to have any influence over the debate.

Note that even moderate democrats stayed on the reservation during Obama's government shutdown.
