Or are they trying to get a more extreme reaction that would require a more forceful response?

As a mostly rational person, I don't want to go "black helicopter", but an escalation to the point of lethal response by government agents to peaceful civil disobedience and protest would light a match that would best remain unlit, IMO..

I believe the use of veterans or veterans groups as antagonists would not work for Obama. If he did want to encourage government crackdown on people he would have to find a group of people that would engender less sympathy when targeted. Using veterans would stir much empathy among the present day armed forces as well as police agencies and the general public.
