IMO, we needed to do all those social programs to see what works and what does not work. Even the ones that didn't work were important because we learn from them; because we are still in the stage of discovering ourselves and how to organize large societies. Millions and billions of people.

We evolved living in bands of about 40 people. We are an animal that we don't even understand.

No one has the answers as we are in the infancy of our social and psychological discovery.

But one thing I know for sure. If you educate people the dependency so many people worry about will disappear. Most of the people on welfare are uneducated. Highly educated people seldom go on welfare unless they have to for some reason like an illness.

So the simplest answer is to simply take care of everyone until you can get everyone educated.

That will work. No need for convoluted social programs. Nor the simplistic and usually wrong ideas of the right wing.

And forcing the unemployed to work is just simple barbaric revenge and hate. You never see compassionate people forcing that issue.

It is like raising a child. You can do it with punishment, or you can do the same thing with humor and sensitivity.

And anyone can see which approach is best for the kid?
