The Republicans have many failures, not the least of which is their inability to manage PR battles. And it is a tough job when the media is in the tank for the other side.

But for now, they're the only people even THINKING about the debt; the Democrats have never (as long as I can remember) wanted to get control of the debt, and they don't even acknowledge the problem, since it is entitlements that created the problem in the first place and they will never willingly let go of those programs.

This was one tiny battle in what will be a very long war. The last one, the Republicans won, this one the Democrats won. The tactics were all wrong in this battle, but they had to try it; if there was only a 1% chance of making a significant difference, it was a risk worth taking imo.

I think it is pretty hopeless at the moment, but other opportunities will present and I hope like hell the Ted Cruz's of the world are not scared away by having their fingers burned on this deal.
