If he gets wise he certainly could be a player as he appeals to that 51% of the middle in the Esquire/NBC poll that are socially libertarian and fiscally conservative.

As I read the Esquire material, that middle box was actually a black box with some boxes inside filled in. The boxes on either end of the political spectrum were reasonably clear but the middle one held lots of boxes the members of which were frequently in conflict with one another, given any issue. Thus, the black box label.

It was a little like the poll numbers of those unsatisfied with the ACA used by the Republicans. As we all know, lots of those are folk who are unsatisfied because they want a single payer system. Much the same problem with the results of this poll.

In a perfectly aligned political universe, Rand Paul could get the base plus some of the "black box." But he is going to run into a concerted effort to pin himself and fellow Republicans into a very negative box because of their vote against ending the shutdown and raising the debt ceiling.

So you think Rand Paul is a "fiscal conservative" yet he and the anarchists just set fire to $24 Billion dollars and watched it burn
and then still voted last nite to crash the world economy
