JB, It could have been an MM grabbing your shares for self. They can only fill market orders in blocks up to the size of the largest corresponding bid or ask. So if your stop volume was higher than the largest bid, it would be broken up into smaller peices.

They can only grab your stop if they first fill all of the bids to get the market down to the stop. They would meet an awful lot of resistance getting the market down to 5 1/4 - they would have to be very fast - and the number of shares you had at that stop would have to be worth it. They would effectively have sold the shares already, or at least most of the shares, in filling the bids on the way down, so their profit would be a little less than the scenerio you put forth.

I beleive that the ask is irrelevant for throwing the stop - only the price counts. So all they have to do is get the bid down to the stop level and make a trade of any size at that level and your shares are up for grabs.
