I saw that about the "benefits being widely known", but without reference to research discounted it as an unsupported assertion.

It's very hard for a journalist who writes a regular news item for the NYTimes to get away with a paragraph like that without very strong supporting evidence. The Times has an aggressive staff that checks all that stuff.

So while that needs to be checked in any op ed piece, wherever it appears, but particularly in the WSJ when the op ed follows the general line of the editorial page, such a broad assertion in a well edited national newspaper like the Times is very reliable. Unless one specifically knows why not.
