I guess we'll "agree to disagree" then. The guns/society/violence/politics nest of issues is a tangled one, and it looks like we have strongly-held beliefs which don't line up easily. >and you were seemingly uninterested in it,< Didn't mean to come off looking like taht. I'm not uninterested, I just don't know how to untangle the stats from the premises. So...rather than get all dug in about something I don't really understand, I tried to move to a neighboring topic. No disrespect intended. >law enforcement agencies are not out-gunned< I don't see that as a threat. Cops get access to weapons that are "hands off" in even the most gonzo gunshops. Uzis. Short M16-style weapons. High-capacity pistols. Short-barrel shotguns and other tools of crowd suppression (you gotta love our institutional capacity for euphemism). About assault weapons and machine guns: I see the media focusing on semi-auto rifles sporting a "military" look and service pistols (like the Beretta or Colt autoloaders) when discussing the next class of "restrictible" guns. Machine guns and items of mass destruction (like explosives or anything with a rocket motor) are already off limits. The url I pulled up some time ago showed that these are not under the umbrella of the Second Amendment. If there's a subgroup in the NRA shouting for them...well we have a clear demonstration of a few rotten apples spoiling the whole barrel. That ain't me, and it ain't any of the gun nuts I hang out with. At an emotional level, I HATE having my AR-15 and my customized Gov't 45 equated with "assault weapons" and war materiel. It's a smear that's very hard to defend against, especially if my audience has presupposed that the only good gun is a police gun. All I can say is "Oh I disagree", but I don't see how to truly address the visceral attitude toward guns. Anyway. Fel free to "get me going" anytime and accept my reassurance that the Casull, real or figurative, stays in its furry greeezy holster. Alex I really think a lot of our back&forth wasn't about guns anymore. I tried to put some daylight between the topics, but you dissented. So... I'm on territory I don't know.
