Given that it uses that 2.5 million figure, it is probably made up. That study was done 20 years ago when crime was much higher. And it is shot through with methodology errors. Plus, it doesn't pass the smell test. If a percent or so of the population used a gun to fight off a bad guy every year, in not too long of a time you'd know someone this has happened to. I don't, do you?

Besides, what happened at the Naval Yard is much more likely. A bad guy with a gun meets a good guy with a gun. Net result is a bad guy with two guns...
