It isn't moral or legal for you to take the personal responsibility of shooting the consumptive alcoholic passed out in front of your home or business. Government can pick him up, but it would be too intrusive for them to put him in your bed, so they take him to the ER.

All your proposals are about how to spend government money and redistribute income. You haven't said one thing about the role personal responsibility plays in this and where the role of government stops intruding into our private strivings. you claimed "the left of center don't value hard work and thrift" I consider myself progressive/liberal... but I'm not for free handouts... I worked long and hard to get myself in my current position... went to work straight out of high school... no handouts for me... so your blanket statement is reminiscent of Willard Rmoney's self-rightious statement that "47% of Americans are moochers"... and of course Willard was born with a silver spoon up his ass When it comes to free handouts and wasting money and driving up our debt and deficits the "faux conservatives" have been the kings of this since raygun... blowing money on endless reckless wars, tax cuts for the plutocrats, offshoring of jobs, offshoring their profits, for-profit healthcare, and telling those without insurance to "go to the emergency room" Today's conservatives seem to only have very short-sighted ideas... they refuse to see the long term benefits of spending money on things like education, science, rebuilding our infrastructure, raising the minimum wage, immigration reform, keeping jobs in this country, etc etc... all they seem to look at is short term... penny wise/pound foolish... of course they do spend a lot of time trying to force their god in your bedroom... maybe it's because they are rooting on Armageddon... today's conservatives worship selfishness and they are by and large monumental hypocrites
