Instagram and Vine for Windows Phones ...

Instagram officially announced for Nokia Lumia and Windows Phone

With a cheer from the Nokia World crowd, Steven Elop announced that Instagram would be coming to Windows Phone in the 'coming weeks'. The Facebook-owned social network built up around mobile photos has long been asked for, and many commentators have been vocal in its absence. It might be a year or two too late to make a significant difference to the perception of Microsoft's mobile app store, but it's another box ticked off.

Assuming it follows the same model as other platforms, the Instagram app will allows users to take pictures from within the app, or select them from their gallery. These can be captioned, tagged, and have a number of different styles and looks applied through the filter system. Following that, they'll be uploaded to the Instagram service and shared with your friends on the site, as well as the option to share with Facebook, Tumblr, Flilckr, Twitter, and Foursquare.

While there is no word on exclusivity to Nokia for Instagram, the implication of "Nokia and Microsoft have been working closely with Instagram" certainly leaves it on the table as an option.

We'll have more on both these apps in the near future when more details are available - even a screenshot or two would be nice, right now we just have the official company logos on the Abu Dhabi stage.

But what we do have is (finally) a clear and unambiguous message on Windows Phone's 'bogey' app. Instagram is coming to Windows Phone... in the next few weeks. My only wish was that Nokia could have said 'and it's in the Windows Phone store right now' for the full PR splash. ###

Along with Instagram, Nokia World also announced the upcoming availability of Vine, the 'six second video sharing service' that was acquired by Twitter before its launch in January this year. This will be the first official Windows Phone client for the service that lets users create and share short videos, and it is expected to be available in the next few weeks.

Just as we saw with the Instagram announcement, details are scarce at the moment beyond the company logo being displayed on the stage and the official word from Stephen Elop. While there has been less public clamour for Vine as there has been for Instagram, it is a notable media based application, and one that is used widely in social media - there's an argument to be made that Vine is the first 'breakout' video based social media service.

----- Vine running on iOS -----

I'm also intrigued to see what happens with 6sec and 6tag, Rudy Huyn's third party clients for Vine and Instagram respectively. at the very least they provide a competent base line that the official apps are going to have to clear.

We'll bring you more news and a full review here on AAWP when the app reaches the Windows Store. ###

The New Ashas (500, 502, 503) ..

... with the new version of the Asha software which noe now features WhatsApp and Line, two of the most successful mobile messaging apps, alongside three photo-related apps: PicFeed, PicTag, and PhotoFunia.

Just as anticipated, Nokia unveiled no less than six new devices at its event today in Abu Dhabi. Three of those have to do with the Windows ecosystem, and we’ve already told you about them: the Lumia 1520, Lumia 1320, and Lumia 2520.

The other three products that Nokia announced are part of the Asha series of low-end handsets that are featurephones but come with a limited set of smartphone-like features. The Asha phones are very popular in some parts of the world, mainly in emerging markets where the famous price per features ratio is the most important thing people consider when they buy a new handset.

The new Asha 500, Asha 502, and Asha 503 come to complement the already available Asha 501, the first device to sport Nokia’s new and improved Asha platform. That in itself got some more updates, which are apparently headed to the 501 in time as well.

The Asha 500 has a 2.8-inch 240×320 touchscreen, a 2 MP camera, 64 MB of RAM, microSD card support, Bluetooth 3.0, and Wi-Fi. It will be available in both single-SIM and dual-SIM versions. Its dimensions are 100.3×58.1×12.8 mm, and it weighs 101.3 grams. Its price before taxes and subsidies is $69.

The Asha 502 comes with a 3-inch 240×320 touchscreen, a 5 MP camera with LED flash, 64 MB of RAM, microSD card support, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Only a dual-SIM variation will be offered. Its dimensions are 99.55×59.5×11.1 mm, and it weighs 100 grams. Before taxes and subsidies, it’s priced at $89.

The Asha 503 has the exact same features as the Asha 502, but throws in 3G support and a Gorilla Glass touchscreen too. In fact, it’s the only one of the three to come with 3G. The Asha 503 will have both single-SIM and dual-SIM versions. Its dimensions are 102.55×60.55×12.7 mm, and it weighs 110.15 grams. It will cost $99 before taxes and subsidies.

The three new Asha phones will be available before the end of this year. Sales will start in the Asia-Pacific region, in developing markets. After that, they will presumably reach other shores, but it’s unclear which or when. The Ashas have traditionally been offered only in emerging markets, which is understandable considering how low-end they are.

The new version of the Asha software now features WhatsApp and Line, two of the most successful mobile messaging apps, alongside three photo-related apps: PicFeed, PicTag, and PhotoFunia. The overall imaging experience has been improved, with access to the camera now being faster (only a swipe away). The gallery and social sharing work better too, supported by the upgraded hardware inside the three new Ashas, and photos can be shared with one tap. ###
