Actually, the language is sort of optional. Ruby is just another c++ derivative with a simplified inheritance model and with the regex stuff from Perl. Now the gems is a neat feature for extending the language, but outside of that...

No, it is about the Rails framework and using modern methodologies. Rails is a great platform for that. It readily fits into an Agile environment. And has a great suite of tools for TDD and BDD. And a RESTful, MVC design pattern is built in. Can you do those things outside of Rails? Sure. But the reality is when crunch time comes, and it will, ditching the discipline to do those things is one of the first things to happen.

It is the 21st century, Dave. Sitting in front of a terminal and becoming one with the machine is so last century...

If you feel you don't have to learn new languages and methodologies, well code development probably isn't for you any more.
