Zenith Digital Set-Top Box Is First to Gain 'Dolby Digital' Licensing
Approval

December 9, 1997 12:56 PM

GLENVIEW, Ill., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Zenith Electronics Corporation ZE has
developed the first digital set-top box to be certified by Dolby Laboratories Inc. for
"Dolby Digital" audio performance, the companies announced today.

Zenith's digital set-top box (Model Z12C), currently in production, delivers crisp
digital pictures and CD-quality sound, as well as increased channel capability and
interactive services.

With Dolby Digital audio, network operators can be assured that Zenith's digital
set-top technology is prepared for the future of digital entertainment, Zenith said on
the eve of the Western Show, the cable industry convention, which starts tomorrow
in Anaheim, Calif.

Charles Seagrave, general manager, Digital Technologies Licensing Group, Dolby
Laboratories Licensing Corporation, said, "Dolby Laboratories is pleased to have
Dolby Digital technology introduced into the digital cable market segment via
Zenith's digital set-top box. This is the first set-top box product to meet Dolby's
stringent performance requirements for Dolby Digital licensing."

"We are proud that Zenith's is the first digital set-top to receive certification,
because Dolby Digital takes the home theater audio experience and kicks it up yet
another notch," said Allen Brown, division vice president and general manager,
Digital Media Group, Zenith Network Systems.

"It offers sound in five channels plus a subwoofer, so if you're watching a movie,
you're getting sounds literally moving all around the room. It's as close to a true
theater-at-home experience as you can get today."

Feature films have been heard in Dolby Digital in movie theaters since 1992, and
according to Brown, more movies and other entertainment content will be featuring
Dolby Digital in the next year, and subscribers will expect to be able to experience
it.

"The Z12C will be ready when this content arrives," Brown said. "Dolby Digital
gives us an advantage because it serves the needs of all types of subscribers -- from
those with the simplest home sound systems to the most sophisticated systems
owned by true audiophiles. It assures our customers they are getting the most
state-of-the-art set-top technology in the industry."
