Truly believe that life is tough and a person has to learn how to cope in order to succeed.

Any program that offers a "way out" from becoming self sufficient I oppose

Totally agree. Using anything as an excuse keeps too many people from ever making a real effort to self sufficiency. Your debate does raise the question as to what percentage of those on the dole these days can be attributed to our record wealth disparity? I know it plays a factor but we already had huge entitlement state by the late 1970's that had barely existed two decades earlier even though the entire period was one of more level income distribution than at any other point the past 100 years..

We have a fundamental disagreement about the role of government

Not sure about that

I am more inclined to think we have a different perspective on where the country finds itself in the 21st century

The fundamental shifts in the composition of the labor markets, driven by outsourcing of most domestic manufacturing, mechanization or automation of large numbers of entry level positions and the continuing political pressure to adopt austerity measures in the delivery of all public expenditures has created massive voids in the availability of jobs

It is a conservative article of faith that nothing has changed and if folks aren't working it is their fault

This is patently bullshit of course

..and the faction of actual malingerers is much smaller than the 47% that has become another conservative article of faith

To the extent that these changes have increased the number of Americans struggling to survive or get medical care, I absolutely believe it is a fundamental government role to expand delivery of services and that this should be done thru tax increases

There is no other way
