INFOWorld likes 3Coms's dial-up server solution in a VPN vs. dial-up comparison.

AccessBuilder 4000
3Com Sportster 33.6Mbps external modems

The results of our Comparison of remote-access virtual private networks (VPNs) and a traditional dial-up server may surprise bleeding-edge technology fans. The old gray mare can still pull a heftier load than the upstarts, and whatever it lacks in sex appeal, it more than makes up for in simplicity, manageability, and even cost, if local calling patterns prevail. In general, the remote-access VPN solutions in this Comparison seemed to be simultaneously suffering from adolescent immaturity and identity crises. Core technologies are based on unfinished standards, management utilities are uneven, crucial performance enhancements such as compression are lacking, security has yet to be proven airtight enough for sensitive data transmission, and long-term support costs for such a complex technology have yet to be assessed.

Although it was assisted by our local dial-up assumptions in the cost analysis, 3Com's top scores in every other category could not be matched by its less-mature VPN competitors. Other than lack of support for Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS), it is hard to find anything negative to say about the AccessBuilder 4000. It set the standards by which we judged the other solutions in the implementation, administration, and performance categories, and it is an elegant, easy-to-use remote-access solution for as many as 16 concurrent analog connections supporting about 250 users.
