I didn't mean to burn the pill bottle.

After the rain stops and sometimes during rain, Just take out 1 or 2 oil soaked cotton balls and use them with some dry kindling to get a "wet" fire going.

Dry kindling can always be found under a fallen tree. Look for dry leaves, termite dust, and dead grasses, then add twigs and pine limbs. If the grasses are dry enough, use your swedish steel to ignite the fire and save the cotton balls for another rainy day.

If we ever used wood to heat our home again, I'd try to find a stove that was so efficient there would be enough coals left over from the night before that we could just throw in more wood in the morning and it would be the catalist that started another round of heating. Not sure if such an animal exists?

We use a 30YO Buck stove.
The trick for us to get that result is 2 fold.

1. Is learning how to bank the wood at night.
2. Is nearly closing both the stove damper and the air inlets.

In the a.m., I use a small steel shovel and a steel bucket to collect the cold ashes and always have a pile of glowing embers left to begin the new fire.

Yesterday I got to thinking about your fire starter question and went through my emergency supply pack in the van. In addition to a swedish steel, I have 4 packs of Coleman waterproof matches on board.

Just now I'm flipping through the latest Duluth Trading catalog for new items. Page 103 has stormproof matches that are wind and rain proof.

I'm taking my Karen camping this weekend for her 60th birthday.

We will be staying several nights at Carolina Beach in an oceanfront campground called The Marriott.
