Venkie,

The low cost PC generates most of CPQ's desktop unit volume gains last quarter. However, it generates less than 1 % of CPQ's profit for last quarter. This skews the IDC unit volume comparisons. How many of the low cost PC's got placed in the business category by CPQ?

I would not be suprised if HWP , Packard Bell and IBM also show large unit volume increases due to the low cost PC this quarter. They are taking share percentages away from CPQ if you believe the recent reports and the activity in the retail stores.

DELL is doing very well following its game plan. I hope they stick to it.

Jim Kelley

venkie, I've never looked at things that short term...
in the july, aug sept period when cpq was beating the heck out of dell on stk appreciation...I didn't have a bunch of post on it....
Like I've said 100 times.
i've been in this thing FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.
When cpq was killing them all , I never said allot.
Dell was doing good in 1990,91,92 then fell flat on it's you know what in 1993....I bot 10,000 shares of dell then too.
and made alllot of money

With the top players in the pc industry it's like football.
You can trash talk the losers of a game ...but,sooner or later you will lose to them and you have to eat your words...
It's best to just say,,I won this one...and not really add a bunch of adjectives since sooner or later you will have to eat your words.
that's the way it's been in pc industry and THAT WILL NOT CHANGE.

but, when cpq's cfo says that sales are going great..it's mean he has come out of the Wednesday MAster Scheduling meeting and they already know what this qtr is going to be by now and the yr./ by now..
So, he had looked at the books before he released that sound byte.
