So Rubio is erasing the credit he got for sponsoring comprehensive reform without getting a whole lot for abandoning it at the most crucial moment. Nice work.

So many people think that they can just get elected, walk into public office and they are immediately masters of political hypocrisy. It takes a combination of true chutzpah and a kind of twisted genius along with circumstantial luck to succeed in this, and it can only be done by sitting at the feet of masters for a few years before setting out on your own. Like LBJ did with Sam Rayburn and Richard Russell. His political mastery wasn't born in a day, and even his tactics wouldn't have succeeded in today's political environment, they wouldn't have been possible. His success really depended on a Congressional structure that no longer exists in addition to his own orneriness, experience and intelligence.

It may be the case that it is impossible to do these days, with the kind of mass media and sophisticated communications networks that we have.
