They want to make government smaller, and get our spending under control. The left meanwhile wants more government bigger government.

I think that this is part of the root of the false equivalency. You are accepting the terms on the Norquist RW--"make government smaller, govt is too big." What Obama said is, I don't want bigger government or smaller government, I want smarter government. We can't have an intelligent dialogue about government about government when the RW just repeats the crap about "big government" without being specific. I can't think of anyone on the left who says, "I want bigger government"--that is just something that is ascribed to the left by the RW in their usual idiotic way.

That's my point, Steve, the false equivalence point. If you take as "extreme" the fact that there is always a middle ground and always a left and right to the middle ground and the left and right are the "extremes" then, at least definitionally, there is no argument.

And, moreover, as Sam says a bit further down, if you accept the right wants smaller government and the left wants bigger government as the mantra for all this, then there you go.

But if you start with the notion (but don't stop there) that "extreme" is favoring anti democratic means to get your way, then only the much further right favors that at the moment, at least within the elected members of the state and federal government.

We know who the extreme right is Steve. They're on TV every Sunday. Who do you see as the "extreme left"?
