A simple way to look at it is what fraction of the economy is largely directed by the government (all levels) vs free enterprise. There is a pretty clear left-right divide on this. The left is generally much more agreeable to passing control of larger chunks of society to governmental control, while the right would like to push government out of more and more aspects of society.

Clearly a pretty board range of systems can work, and I suspect that the choice of system that is most successful for a given society might depend on the composition of that society. Its likely a mistake to think one size fits all...

America being one of the most diverse nations on earth, likely has a bit tougher time agreeing on what should work best for all of us.

Alex; Once again you miss the complete premise of my argument. I am for socialized medicine and I am for many of the safety nets that I mention here - what I am arguing about and have been arguing all along is that we MUST pay for them. That when you don't pay for them but instead borrow from China - and then expect our kids to have to deal with the consequences of being indebted to China just as China becomes a super power - well that is nation suicide. Now if you want to take the other side of my argument - at least understand what it is I'm arguing against.
