john, I've been saying that the bto program will lower cpq doa rates for 6 months.
I've been doing bto with cpq through a dealer since 1993...
my doa's have been ZERO.
not the case with dell when I get them right off the line.

John:

Don't get DVD just yet - wait til next year til the dust has settled and there is a common std. Also, you will get a read-and-write DVD eventually.

DVD now is a waste of time - it's slow, and how many DVD movies are you going to watch on your laptop???

Also, a note of caution regarding the 14.1" screen - while it's great, bis, shiny, and all, technically it's a bit of a hazardous issue, coz the LCD isn't getting lighter while it grows in size. That Mg frame needed to support it makes it very sensitive to cracking under pressure, literally.

I think, though, your choice of the IBM is a good one. The ThinkPads are great - robust, well-designed, solid workhorses. There aren't many products out there that can compare!
