Importing goods from poorer countries with lower standards doesn't mean subjecting American workers to those standards. There are reasons why these countries are poorer, they have less accumulated capital and lower productivity. They compete against more productive workers by costing less to employ (lower wages and lower working conditions and standards). Americans don't have to go to that level of pay and conditions because American workers are more productive then developing country workers.
