"Most of us genuinely believed that real estate would go nowhere but up"

Only morons Ten. I believe I tried to warn you when you lived in OC and bought a house there.

When my Oceanside house became worth 5x the mortgage value, I sold it, even though some were telling me I was "missing the top" and selling too soon. I knew we were in a bubble, and the real danger wasn't missing the top, but missing the pop.

>But no one can protect us from ourselves. Even those who claim to be doing just that are using us to further their own political careers.

Of course. but so what? They didn't get there by not furthering their political careers. If it helps, I don't care why they do it.

>Maybe in the process they come up with something that will ensure we don't fool ourselves again,

Glass-Steagal worked in a lot of ways for 60+ years until it was repealed in 1999, which drove a ton of this -- there wasn't nearly the incentive to blindly sell mortgages until then.

>but all of that is only crafted with the benefit of hindsight.

Hindsight is more valuable than blindness. Also, listening to the people who called it correctly (and there were people who did) is valuable.

>Bottom line is that the next time you claim that we were all lied to, I humbly ask you to figure out exactly who was lying to us. Or if you can't get past the easy answer, I humbly ask you to figure out who's job it is to protect us from said lies.

There are only a certain number of people that have the power to do that. I'm not one of them.
