I've never been quite sure why they tax capital gains at different rates than ordinary income. To me, it's a blatant favoritism for the wealthy. The only possible justification that I can find is that for those Americans who have saved their entire lives and built up enough capital to live off the dividends and interest, instead of sucking off the government tit, are maybe getting a little bit of a break.

But if it were me, I'd just have one simple tax structure for all income and get rid of all the tax breaks, credits, and all the other non-sense. Everyone needs to pay into the system and no favoritism should be shown to anyone.
