Think about children. The first art is often body art. That would not be preserved. When the first human like ape colored itself with ochre, art was born. I'm sure there were innumerable ephemeral art works created over the millennia, but primitive man was not thinking about preservation. We are lucky there are any preserved examples. To imagine that art began when we find the first examples is so self centered it's ridiculous. I find it hard to believe any art historian would believe that, and say that.
