I have now made and lost fortunes with Ariad twice (2008, 2013) and find in some perverse way I enjoy the thrill of the chase more than the NAV driven commercial investing. Fortunately both times I took all the money that I put in ARIA out on the way up before the blow-ups (leaving the paid-for shares to ride up and ultimately fall) To successfully navigate a mine field there are perhaps a couple of ways to mitigate risk. One is to expect blow-ups that will send the pps down to unimaginably low levels (way below book value perhaps) and be patient and wait for them. The other is to be willing to take profits before the next blow up and not kick yourself when unexpected good news shows you left money on the table. In any case, best of luck, because this kind of trading requires a lot of it (and perhaps a little skill and the right temperament - and perhaps mine is a little too optimistic)...
