Liberal and conservative behavior goes all the way back to the cave days. The ancient Greeks (Athens) were very liberal for those days and had a more liberal society than any on earth for close to two thousand years after they fell. Plato and Socrates and any one of a thousand ancient Greek thinkers are great examples of liberal thought. Of course liberalism must be seen in relation to the norms, mores and level of consciousness of the time period in which they lived..
