Heresy was punished, especially if the heretic was a priest as it seems most of them were. However you can't name a single person put to death over a scientific issue.

BTW, did you know ancient Greek Pythagoreans drowned the mathemetician Hippasus for publicizing the square root of 2. It offended their religious ideas about numbers.

Hippasus wasn't the only ancient Greek put to death for heresy ... remember Socrates, whom you mentioned in an earlier post. He was put to death for impieity. Not a coincidence that heresy is a Greek word.
