Well Dimitri... I've been here a long time.. by far this has been my favourite site... by a very wide margin... and again I don't mind ads.. I understand the need.. but my FB is going dark because of constant ads and suggestions.. play this inane game requests... as I posted earlier were it not for a FB group I belong to which only has a two year life span.. my FB would already be dark.. frankly the actual 'ads' on FB are actually LESS INTRUSIVE than the approach SI has taken...

BTW I paid a long time ago and now >40K posts of content contribution (granted much of it frivolous banter... but that's what makes a community) ... I find myself demoted to 'Veteran' ....sigh... you guys know what kind of draw Dale Baker is right ? maybe someone at SI should put on their thinking caps and think about future possible members due to posters like Dale ?

anyway.. the advertising scheme has no subtlety... and is causing blunt force trauma..

my 2cents...

Jack

Dmitry: Thank you for the tutorial on how internet sites generate revenue. Rest assured I understand now, and I understood prior to your "lesson", how that happens.

FYI, I was a career software developer of big bux applications and I wrote code that is STILL running in data centers around the world, even though I retired 17 years ago.

Is this the point in our discussion where I mention the significant amount of time and energy I expended in the early days supporting SI, suggesting enhancements, testing a zillion scenarios ... all at no cost to SI?

Is this where I mention speaking with SI Bob about a joint venture a decade or so ago?

Or, should I wait until a bit later in the discussion?

No matter how you slice it, ticking off your long term loyal users is not a good thing to do. The amount of revenue that will be "generated" by suppressing ads from those folks is far offset by the ill will.

There! You now know my opinion.

But, that's just me exercising my right of Free Speech, which I and many thousands of other men and women served in the armed forces to protect so you and your members have the right to speak their opinions without undue censorship.

Which brings us back to the banning of Dale Baker ...

Sure is a pretty day.

Dmitry, how long are you guaranteeing the site to be around for lifetime signups? Will there be prorated refunds?

So, even though I paid for a 'Lifetime subscription' back in 1997 when SI was new, and needed support, the current ownership has determined that I must either look at ads, and the resulting page loading delays- or buy another subscription, or lose my access to SI?
Just looking for clarification on this line:

"After December 1, no subscription offering will include the ability to block ads. "

If I am actually able to dig into 1997 records and produce proof that I paid SI for a Lifetime membership, will I be able to use SI without the ads? That is a key question, at this point, and probably will be a key question for many other members, whose 'Lifetime membership's have been downgraded to 'Veteran.'

We ask that you disable ad blockers while on Silicon Investor in the best interests of our community.

If SI reduces the number of Ads to at most two banner ads one at the top and one at the bottom I am willing to disable the ad blockers. If SI continues to insert Ads in between the messages when read 10-20 at a time, then I will use an ad blocker or stop using SI.
