HILTON HEAD, S.C., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Guidera Communications today announced it has been retained by Advanced Optics Electronics, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: ADOT), Albuquerque, NM to inform Wall Street brokers about its patented electronic instantly changeable billboards. "The $2.3 billion outdoor advertising industry grew fast due to technological advances. The rule preventing new tobacco ads on billboards as of 1/l/98 changes the complexion of billboard advertising -- they are more acceptable now. Demand is exploding and rates already increased 50 percent. Advanced Optics Electronics builds large scale flat panel displays suitable for 14' x 42' billboards based on its patented SLM (Spatial Light Modulator) light valve, which offers unsurpassed speed, definition and clarity when compared to current LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) units," said Rosanne C. Oakley, President of Guidera. She added: "The outdoor billboard industry will utilize this technology to create and control advertising displays from a remote location via satellite. Advertisers can tailor messages for such short-term markets as morning drive-time commuters, up-coming events, etc. This fast reaction time is not possible with today's "paper & paste" outdoor billboard. Billboards are seen as highly cost-effective, since they are usually priced 80% less than TV, 70% less than print media, and 50% less than radio. Advanced Optics Electronics' SLM system will allow billboard companies to market ads much the same way as TV and radio spots. ADOT is working on a $1.7 million contract to produce two 14' x 42' billboards." The company's patented technology also has applications in industrial, medical and communications markets. It benefited from original research done by the government at Los Alamos & Sandia Laboratories. Flat panel displays are heavily used in military applications, computer monitors, and high definition TV/film transmission. The market for electronic display devices is expected to grow from its current $17 billion to $40 billion by the year 2001. In addition to efforts in flat panel displays, ADOT is negotiating to acquire new technology that can be used by oil and pipeline companies to remotely monitor the status of fuel storage tanks and pipelines, and by the agriculture industry to monitor irrigation systems.
