Well over 95% of all union political contributions go to democrats. Then democrats pay off unions to reward them for their loyalty. If Republicans would learn to limit their political payoffs to organizations with that kind of loyalty, they might get more loyal support. The political payoffs to liberal groups in the first half of the 2000's decade was laughed at by the beneficiaries. For instance Republicans should have dug in firm against unionized the airline gropers.
