You maybe right. Evolution may have selected for a god gene which helped cohesion.

But the ancient Greeks were not particularly religious and they were centuries ahead of everyone else. And Athens was certainly the most civilized city on earth at the time. 500 BC!!

In fact Plato said: "let those who do not understand, count beads".

Plato also said: "be kind to everyone as everyone is suffering." (paraphrased).

So if we think people pretty much suck right now, in terms of their mass stupidity, and their rush to devastate the planet, I assume we can blame religion for that, since it's been so integral in our evolution.
