Tench:

What is the difference between these examples, economically:

1) A vandal breaks a window while no one is around.

2) A vandal breaks a window while and its witnessed by an uninterested individual.

3) A property owner breaks his own window for the hell of it.

4) A property owner breaks his own window to promote a charity event in front of an excited crowd?

5) A policeman holds a gun to a property owners head and tells him to break his window or else.

yada yada.

In all cases, the function of the window is loss, and the effect on the economy of replacing it is identical. Worrying about what is going through the heads or motivating the actions of actually breaking the window are completely irrelevant, as is labeling some of them vandalism and others entertainment.
