Tandem puts Java on Himalaya servers
By Charles Babcock

Tandem, a unit of Compaq Computer Corp., is offering high-availability, online transaction processing for the Web by adapting its servers to run Java applications, officials are slated to announce at Tandem headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., today.

The new software environment for Himalaya will be dubbed NonStop Server for Java. It will be able to perform all the functions of Tandem's existing 24-hour-per-day, seven-day-per-week high-end servers. Tandem attempts to provide a guarantee of continuous operation by designing parallel backup systems to its hardware and software.

Tandem has added the Java Virtual Machine to its operating system, the NonStop Kernel, to enable it to run Java applications. In addition, it has adapted the Servlet application program interfaces in the Java Software Development Kit 1.1.2 tool kit so that its iTP Webserver package also has high availability running Java applications, said Michael Dowers, Tandem's manager for object-oriented products. Tandem high-availability features include an ability to isolate faulty hardware or software components and shift their work to other processors.

Tandem systems are frequently used to run automatic teller machine systems, online stock trading, point-of-sale retail systems and cellular phone systems, where high availability is crucial to the business.

"We've added the Tandem fundamentals underneath the Java Development Kit 1.1.2," Dowers said.

The move also allows Tandem users to develop Java applications on a low-cost operating system platform, such as Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT or IBM Corp.'s OS/2, and then deploy those applications on high-performance servers.

NonStop Server for Java will include an ability to use NonStop SQL, Tandem's database management system.

Tandem Computer Inc. was acquired by Compaq in August and is now the high-performance branch of the desktop and Intel Corp. server maker.
