Ohhh, sweeping generalization time, eh Sal? I wouldn't say any box, PCI based boxes maybe, but not any box.

Take a look at the STREAMS benchmark numbers for an example of what I mean. OTOH, the assembly posted earlier will fit nicely into L1 cache, and wouldn't likely suffer from the deleterious effects of CPU <=> Memory bandwidth starvation.
