The fact that other spending is significantly higher and growing faster is hardly a tangential point, its central to the discussion of the fiscal problems the federal government faces.

As for the FDA they should put out.

They already do, but they shouldn't. Its one thing to have some approval mechanism (governmental or not), and have governments insurance companies (if they choose to) etc. not pay for drugs that are unapproved, but if someone wants to take them anyway, and pay for them with their own money, the government should go after them as outlaws.

I'd apply that even stronger to non-tainted foods. In this case the trans fats are so common largely because of previous government advice and pressure against saturated fats.
